Are we not going to run a read-only Subversion server and sync it with
Monotone?   If not, this complaint becomes, "Forcing potential developers to
learn a new version control system," which increases the barrier to entry. 
The other option is to have people create patches from the most recent
release, and while that may work fine in most cases, it is not as good as
having people make patches from trunk.
