You are looking for the service discovery information that comes back from
the server right after you succesfully sign in. disco#info or disco#items.
Specifically, you are looking for <identity> tags and one with
category='directory'. (Though looking over the specs again pidgin could
probably stand to understand more types of directories, but that's not
relevant to your issue.)

Like I said, you can just paste the relevant sections into an email and
we'll point out what is broken or if it is just missing.
