Reducing tab size

I (being color-blind) already have a lot of trouble with the tab text
colors: mostly I can't tell the difference between "someone is typing
to me" green and "someone has changed state" grey. I'm rejecting your
proposal before even reading it ;)

Would "normal" text for available, italicized for un-available, and
strike-through for offline be enough information? It would certainly
satisfy my insatiable hunger for space ;)
