Default Buddy Group Protocol

Is there a way to set the default protocol that an Identity will use?

For instance my friend Jeff has three protocols associated with his 
identity: AIM, Gmail, and Bonjour

I would like to specify Pidgin to use them in this order:
Bonjour
Gmail
AIM

But when I click to send a message to Jeff, it sends it through the 
protocols in this order:
AIM
Gmail
Bonjour

How might I change this?

And if it is not currently possible to change this, I would like to 
request this feature, either in the core, or through a plugin.
