Avatars for Services and Users

Is there any way to change the specific avatar of a service? I'm not talking about my personal avatar; I'm referring to the green dots, themselves. Also, the avatars in the buddy list aren't being displayed for my buddies that are connected to yahoo or aim. I'm new to the list, so I'm sorry if this is normal.
