I can't using nss or gnutls to connect with MSN

Did you rebuild pidgin once you had the correct SSL development
headers/packages installed? What does Help->About say about SSL?

Correct, only one of gnutls or nss/nspr is necessary, but they are
necessary at build time. Also, pidgin can't use openssl, so it being
installed is irrelevant.
