Restoring compatibility with old plugins

I see you have done that now, thank you :)

I've created an im.pidgin.pidgin.2.3.1 branch and plucked bugfixes and
this to it.

I'd like to release from this branch soonish due to the MSN problems and
plugin compatibility issues in 2.3.0, but the plugin compat fixes have
not been verified yet (by me, at least). What do others think?
