Looking at the archive, I see exactly ONE piece of spam making it past
the server side filter. This does not seem at all to be a significant
problem.

Being an open list that anyone can post to has advantages and
disadvantages. The primary advantage, as I see it, is that we get
feedback from anyone looking to report a problem or ask a question, not
just those willing to subscribe. The primary disadvantage is that no
spam filtering system is 100% foolproof. Without moderating everything,
it is guaranteed that at least a little spam will get through.
