2.0.0. crash with electric fence

Pekka Riikonen spake unto us the following wisdom:
> When running 2.0.0 with electric fence, the following occurs on every run:

This is quite possibly a bad interaction between g_slice and Electric
Fence; we know that there is such an interaction with mcheck.  Try
running:

G_SLICE=always-malloc pidgin

... and see if the problem goes away.
