I'm going to ignore "Reset formatting", because as you noted, that can
disappear. Fixing that bug will be easier than this redesign, I
suspect. ;)

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to replace the individual buttons
with two buttons. That's a huge waste of space for two buttons.

I'm not against the changes at the top of your mock-up, but they don't
solve any problems for me personally.
