If you use a generic title like "Conversations (5)" for a window
containing five conversations, then you can use something like
"Conversations (Joe, Alice)" for the window containing unread IMs from
Joe and Alice.

You do sacrifice the window having the title of the current
conversation, which might or might not matter.

(I was about to say that Empathy (and hence presumably Gossip) does
this, but I seem to be making it up—it seems always to show the number
of conversations even when some have new messages.  I could have sworn
I'd seen it doing this.)
