Connecting pidgin

Pidgin won't connect to MSN on XP Pro SP2. There are no actual instructions 
for connecting Pidgin in the FAQ. I use a HTTP proxy in MSN and set Pidgin 
up the same way but get the message

jkl_345 at hotmail.com disconnected: Connection error from Notification server: 
Writing error

Do you have any ideas?
