There is a relatively easy workaround to this.

You can set up a "portable" type installation of Pidgin (see
http://d.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#RunningWindowsPidginFromaUSBDrivePortableMode)
that will use a different GTK+ runtime than whatever is installed on the
system.
