how to use send_im

Hi, I'm trying to make a Pidgin plugin which should be able to automatically
respond whenever a buddy contacts me.
I'm having problems with sending an im  inside a conversation. I've seen
that there is this send_im function for doing this but I
can't figure out how to use it. It would be great if you could please give
me an example of how send_im works.
