Use of smileys according to GPL

Hi,

I am currenly developing a forum for a client that has a website. The 
client wants to use graphical smileys for which we went through a couple 
of smiley sets to get a feeling of the smiley theme-style she was 
looking for. It turns out that the Tango project and the Pidgin smileys 
are very interesting, but both released under GPL.

So my question is: Are we allowed to use the smiley icons for the 
website without open-sourcing the entire project?
