IRC text was sent through g_markup_escape_text(), which I believe was to escape
any characters that have special meaning in HTML, such as <, >, &, etc. when
written to a conversation area that expects HTML.

The IRC plugin *is* written to the IRC specification.  Ethan can verify that, as
he wrote it.
