autogen.sh errors with stat

At some point in the recent past, autogen.sh began giving me errors I  
hadn't seen previously while running 'stat'.  mtn annotate shows that  
the line was changed in grim's [d064c099] which was to improve error  
output, so it may have started then, but I'm not positive.  Output at  
the end of the email.

I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Any thoughts?
