There is a chance this is related to the apparent libxml2 2.16.6 bug
where people weren't receiving messages because of some namespace
oddity. Do you not see the responses in the debug window at all? Were
these clients using this libxml2 version?

Ethan points out why this wouldn't work, but it's probably worth
noting that we only *send* the ping if we haven't received anything in
some time, which should mitigate this somewhat.
