Making Pidgin small-screen-friendly

Whoops, I forgot to mention that there are a couple bugs about these
issues, and the backstory:

They have patches by Ying-Chun Liu that use scrollbars to make
everything fit.  After talking with him about possible alternatives, we
came up with the proposals in the original email.
