SOLVED! Pidgin ignores DISPLAY variable.

You probably need at least DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS set. That said, if
you're manually setting the display variable, it sounds like you're
trying to do something overly complicated for an initial test. Try from
a terminal run from the same X session as Pidgin.
