Sorry just seen this reply.
I think I may have solved it. It appears there is a known issue with AVG (and some other firewalls). It has an option to shield MSN, Yahoo and ICQ. It appears it can cause random disconnects.
Just been logged off repeatedly in the last hour (every few minutes) and was starting to wonder what to do until I did and advanced google search looking for results in the last year.
So I think it was just coincidence I was using libpurple at the time.
Fingers crossed I don't see the problem again now I have disabled AVG shield for MSN.

I haven't heard of this problem before. Does it happen 100% of the time? What function are you using to send the message? And what parameters are you giving it? What are you sending as the message?
HTML? Plain text?
If you're able to reproduce this problem, it's probably worth trying to notify Microsoft about it.
