adding tls client cert authentication

I'm playing with adding client2server certificate authentication to libpurple's 
xmpp support. Is anyone else working on this currently? I've seen a couple 
messages to the list (http://pidgin.im/pipermail/devel/2009-July/008642.html) 
discussing added SASL EXTERNAL support and client cert authentication but 
don't see any code in the repository (maybe in a branch somehwere?).  I have a 
hacked version of the gnutls ssl plugin successfully  exchanging certs, but 
still need to get SASL EXTERNAL working and cert management in Pidgin.
