I'm terrible at doing things on time, but I just committed
ece03c16966f58e1db43e5c20fe35a6707b468d2, which causes
purple_conversation_clear_message_history to clear the UI backlogs.

My recollection was this would be sufficient for mxit's use, right, as you
already call that?  Please test and let me know if it needs tweaking.
