How to add SAML support to purple?

Hello,

I am trying to add SAML 2.0 support to Adium/ Pidgin.
I know they use libpurple as underlying library that implements SASL.
Where can I get more detailed info on how SASL mechs are implemented in
purple and how I can add SAML 2.0 support?
I appreciate any help.
