If Pidgin uses it, then Pidgin should link with it, regardless of
whether GTK does or does not. In this case, Pidgin uses X11 for VV
stuff (though that's not exactly correct, but I'll fix it later.)

Yea, that seems right, but you should add X11_CFLAGS as well. It
should have been there all this time, but presumably GTK+ always
provided it.
