Just a note, despite all drama around, the heartbleed bug was 
just a bug, which has been fixed the next day after discovery.

Perhaps, you mean the panic which arouse around the Heartbleed 
which some (LibreSSL, BoringSSL) used to entrech their fiefdoms 
and NIH sensibilities. I think exactly the simplicity with which 
pidgin can switch TLS library in the midst of such panic is in 
my opinion more liability than benefit.
