Neither of these are really security issues.

The crash-on-registration is a known issue that will be fixed in the next release.  The 'not authorized' message means that the password is wrong, so make sure you set it correctly in Pidgin (based on what you set it to at http://register.jabber.org).  If you can't get that to work, you'll need to follow the instructions at http://www.jabber.org/lost-password/.
