pidgin won't start

I must be missing somethimg very basic here.

I compiled and installed (as root) on SUSE 10.2 (64 bits) using defaults.

Everything "seemed" to go well but when I try to start pidgin I get :

"pidgin: error while loading shared libraries: libpurple.so.0: cannot open 
shared object file: No such file or directory"



Here is a listing of /usr/local/lib contents:  [it is in PATH]
