This sounds like a charset problem. Are you using UTF-8 on both sides? 
Your ssh client (putty/konsole/whatever), should be configured accord to 
the server. After changing the charset on the client it's enough to 
switch between screen windows and back (ctrl+a four times) to refresh 
the screen.
