Thanks for the quick response, I wasn't aware of the GTK+ IM feature.  A 
quick google research pointed me to an envoronment variable that sets 
the default imput method: GTK_IM_MODULE.  Setting GTK_IM_MODULE=cedilla 
did the trick for me.
