Finch in linux console

Hi, I get strange characters in my buddy list. In a console in X there are
circles next to buddies in the list, but in a linux console they are
question marks. I've tried playing with various fonts but can't seem to
find any that don't display these ? except cybercafe. But this isn't a 
very clear font to read.

Has anyone managed to set up their linux console to look good with finch
and can tell me how to do this?
