Question #40741 on pidgin in ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+question/40741

seenxu proposed the following answer:
the gtk build-in searchbox has a wordaround. simply click on the contact
list, type the letters which will match the contact you want to find.

but it has also limitation, which means it doesn't have the filter
functionality that gtalk or dolphin has already had, it starts to search
from the first letter of your contact's name, so you have to type a little
bit more. because I have aliases for all my contacts(in order of family
name, first name, or a short id), so this way just works for me now.:D
