This is nothing to do with XP or VMWare. The Linux distribution you are
using is running NetworkManager, and NetworkManager is reporting that
you have no network connection, so Pidgin does not try to connect.
Either fix your NetworkManager configuration, or stop the NetworkManager
service if you are not actually using it to configure networking in the
Linux guest OS.
