Prevent MSN from sending SMS?

Is there a way to configure Pidgin so that when it sends a message to a
MSN user that it will NOT send the message to the user's cell phone?

For some reason, Pidgin often displays a contact as being online even
when they are not and if I send a message to the contact, they receive
it on their cell-phone, which they are charged for.

Short of the person removing their phone number from their MSN profile,
is there a way of preventing Pidgin from forwarding messages to SMS when
I send them?
