Because you are doing something wrong, or you are trying to use it in an 
environment which is incompatible with accessing Yahoo chat.

The most common problem is sticking @yahoo... at the end of the user name.

However, you may be using an out of date Pidgin.  Yahoo are, or are 
about to change their service in a way that makes it incompatible with 
version of Pidgin before 2.5.8.

Please specify version of Pidgin.  Type and version of OS.  How you are 
connected to the internet, with particular reference to firewalls, 
proxies and address translation.  What happens with the official Yahoo 
client.  The contents of the Pidgin debug log.
