ubuntu proxy problem

I tried to access pidgin in ubuntu. i set the proxy to use global settings
and tried to login to my gmail account. But it tells me that "Could not
establish a connection with the server:HTTP proxy connection error 503". I
even tried it with environment variables. still it give me error. can anyone
help me with this?
