viewing log files

i am trying to view a user log file from the other day (2/17/2009).  however, when i pull up the user log files saved, the files stop recording user logs as of 12/31/2008.  is there a way to find the 2009 log files?  or are they saved in another location?  why would logging be disable starting 1/1/2009?  any help, or advice is appreciated.
