Gnome proxy settings does not work

Has anyone got "use gnome proxy settings" feature to work? This has
not worked for me since ever (i tried earlier 2.x versions even
2.0.1). Ive been using gnome from 2.20 to 2.24 also and it doesnt seem
to read the proxy settings regardless of whether i use a configuration
script or enter the proxy manually in gnome settings. Why is this the
case? Even firefox can get the gnome proxy settings...
