AIM using Jabber protocol - anyone know about this?

About a year ago, AIM had adopted a jabber server and had put one up at
xmpp.oscar.aol.com.

I've not had luck in getting it going - just tells me that it can't
connect in my current version of Pidgin (2.4.3 as found in Debian
testing).  The only thing it does is just sit there and look cute.

As such, is there anything I'm missing, such as where to look for the
actual error beyond merely "failed to connect"?
