Pidgin Failes to Load

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and I have entered the depository: "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main" I have Authenticated it and when I mark all changes and reload, I get an error can not find distribution. I have copied and pasted directions on http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu. I copied the sudo and echo sections and pasted them in Terminal. As a new user and still trying to improve my skills, I am unhappy that I can not get it to work. Is there some other way to get it to work? Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
