How to install patches

Hi, 
Im new with pidgin and I was wonderin how to install a patch... I want to install this one http://developer.pidgin.im/attachment/ticket/9066/add-animated-smileys-v0.7.patch but I have no clue, I just see a bunch of code or I can download a .patch file. Ive search on the website but I couldnt find anything. Can you please send me a link with instructions on how to achieve this,
