There isn't enough information here for us to guess what might be
happening.  The most likely cause is a network issue of some sort,
perhaps there is an IM proxy between you and the server.

A debug log (http://d.pidgin.im/wiki/TipsForBugReports) will provide
more useful information that could be used to track down what is
actually happening.
