Changing the pager host was a temporary solution at best.  It is likely
Yahoo eventually got around to disabling all servers providing access to
the old login method.

In the end, upgrading Pidgin to version 2.5.7 or getting a version
backported with the fixes from your package provider is the only way to
fix this issue.

updated Pidgin packages for Ubuntu releases.
