English spell checking when running in Japanese

Hi,

I'm running Pidgin 2.5.2 (Ubuntu) in a Japanese environment.  I have spell checking turned on, but it underlines every 
English and Japanese word I type.

Is there something I can do to get the English spell checking to work correctly?
