using dbus with finch

I am trying to use dbus-send with finch. I was able to get the example  
in http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/DbusHowto

working fine with pidgin, however trying to run any dbus remote  
command without a display does not
seem to work. I tried setting DISPLAY=0:0, no help. I realize that  
this is more of a dbus question than finch,
however I was wondering if anyone had come across this issue.   
According to everything that I have
read about dbus, it is not dependent on x11.

# dbus-launch finch

# dbus-monitor --session
Failed to open connection to session message bus: dbus-launch failed  
to autolaunch D-Bus session: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization  
failed.
