How to change the language to Spanish?

Hello,

I've compiled pidgin-2.6.2 on my FreeBSD 8-CURRENT laptop and want to
change the language from English to Spanish. Maybe the problem is that I
don't run Gnome environment, but KDE. In gconf-editor I see some other
Gnome-aware apps (like stardict, tangoGPS, ... I'm using) but not
Pidgin; setting LANG=es_ES.ISO8859-1 in the env does not help either.
The FAQ points to Gnome-settings, but I don't see how to change this.
Thanks for a hint.

Btw: Concerning the installation in the EeePC 900, I ended up with
compiling it there too. It took some time, but went fine.
