Windows Live Messenger

Hi,
I got Pidgin so I could get rid of the terribly annoying Windows Live
Messenger.  It seems to work fine; however, I have been told by my contacts
that I appear to be offline to them even as I am messaging them.  I just
installed Windows 7, and I don't know if that has anything to with it.  I've
tried the obvious things like making sure my status is set to available.
 What do I do to make my contacts see me when I come online?
