PROBLEM WITH GREEK CHARACTERS

Hellocan you please help me with this issue?I use Pidgin for online chatting via Linux Mint 8.I am not sure if I pressed a wrong button,but when I choose the option for Greek characters,symbols appear instead.While USA characters work fine.This is only within the limits of Yahoo Messenger.When I log out,both characters work fine.I cannot find any answer from FAQ.Thank you in advance.GEORGE
