Don't change the setting in their settings, change it just for that session.

If option A doesn't work, you can't go wrong by trying option B. Especially
when 99% of the users don't know/care about option B, and just want to go
online.

Whether or not my connection used "client login" is an implementation
detail. As a user of your application I want to see it as a black box. Just
press login and go, no fiddling with extraneous check boxes under advanced
tabs.
