no sound notification in IRC chat rooms

Hi folks:

I am using build 2.6.5, trying to fix my problem with no sound 
notifications when in a Chat room. Sound works for IM's. I really need 
this because I have many windows open on my workstation, and multiple 
workspaces, so when people participate in a chat I need to be able to 
respond while multi-tasking, without the annotance of needing to check 
every five minutes in the chatroom.

Can anybody suggest a way to troubleshoot this? Both ALSA and PulseAudio 
appear to be working properly with other apps.
